It was only three days after her foal had been born, but chestnut mare Bon Bon was quite relaxed about my
presence there, following her little pinto filly as she explored the stable, the salt-lick
near the stable door, and other delights of her new world. The filly was even trying out the
fresh hay left in the pasture beside the stable.
I was crouched there just watching the four mares and their foals, two of which were still fairly protective of their new progeny. Rapdancer had come up briefly for the obligatory scratch but her four day old foal, a little bay colt, was rather shy.
Bon Bon thought she'd like a scratch too and wandered over, her little filly on the far side.
As I was scratching Bon Bon, a little nose appeared under her chin. I gently patted it. It
The little filly though that this was just great, and decided she wanted more, pushing forward, and almost climbing onto my lap, where she stayed, enjoying a good all-over scratch, punctuating it with little grunts and shoves with her nose. Bon Bon kept her eye on proceedings, her head over my shoulder at first, but she was not worried. Eventually tired from her mornings adventures, the little foal lay down between Bon Bon and myself for a nap.
